Partial Lunar Eclipse Will Take Place This Evening

A partial eclipse of the Moon takes place on the evening of 31st December.

In a lunar eclipse, the Earth, Sun and Moon are almost exactly in line and the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. The Moon is full but moves partly into the shadow of the Earth and dims dramatically with the shadowed portion of the lunar surface lit by sunlight that passes through the Earth’s atmosphere. Stronger atmospheric scattering of blue light means that the light that reaches the lunar surface has a reddish hue, so observers on Earth will see a Moon that has a darkened southern tip, with hints of colour that depend on terrestrial conditions.

The Moon travels to a similar position every month, but the tilt of the lunar orbit means that it normally passes above or below the terrestrial shadow. A Full Moon is seen but no eclipse takes place.

Lunar eclipses are visible wherever the Moon is above the horizon and this one will be visible from virtually all of Europe and Asia, the western half of Australia and the extreme eastern part of North America.

It begins as the Moon enters the lightest part of the Earth’s shadow, the penumbra, at 1715 GMT. At 1852 GMT the southern part of the Moon will enter the darker terrestrial shadow, the umbra. Mid-eclipse is at 1923 GMT, when 2.5% of the area of the visible surface of the Moon will be within the umbral shadow of the Earth. The Moon leaves the umbra at 1954 GMT and the eclipse ends when it leaves the penumbra at 2130 GMT.

Wooden leg

Both Travelodge and Swallow Hotels claim that they have discovered artificial limbs in their rooms after guests have checked out. In one year, between 2003 and 2004, Travelodge says 80 false limbs were left behind in its various outlets. via and

Calling All Malware Busters!

My old computer is not dying from old age as previously thought, but harbouring a Gremlin or two. Serves me right for claiming to have a PC like Fort Knox. For the first week it refused to send/receive emails and browse, AVG and Spybot scans found nothing but after a week, AVG is picking up Trojan Downloader.small.61.bw - there's practically no information on it at all, and I can't get rid. I don't mind losing the use of the old dear but I have an external hard-drive attached with 85GB of music and photos...is it likely to be infected too?

Right, who's gonna let me try out the external drive on their computer? ;-)

Animals In The Womb

These amazing embryonic animal photographs of dolphins, sharks, dogs, penguins, cats and elephants are from a new National Geographic Documentary called "Extraordinary Animals in the Womb". The show's producer, Peter Chinn, used a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and tiny cameras to capture the process from conception to birth. They are the most detailed embryonic animal pictures ever seen. via

Man 'finishes' World of Warcraft

A Taiwanese man has been named as the first player to 'finish' World of Warcraft.

'Little Gray', as his character's known, is the first to successfully complete all of the MMO's 986 achievements listed in the armory, reports MMO Champion.

To reach the milestone the Taiwanese power-player killed 390,895 creatures, accumulated 7,255,538,878 points of damage, completed 5,906 quests (that's 14.62 quests per day, apparently), raided 405 dungeons and hugged 11 players.

The achievement hasn't arrived without some controversy though; WoW-heads point out that technically he's still missing one illusive, event-tied achievement (called "BB King"), but he's managed to dodge it via a glitch awarding one extra, false achievement point. via

So what? I finished the Internet ;-)

I'm Not Dead

My old computer is an arsehole, trying to set up the new one. Back soon.
