Box Beds

Box-beds (lits-clos) were common in Western Europe prior to the 20th century. The beds were enclosed in furniture, often intricately carved, that looks like a cupboard. They offered privacy and protection from cold. This collection of French Postcards, in addition to the ladies, features box-beds in Brittany, France.

  1. Great photographs. I particularly like the clothing in the last picture. I'd never heard of box beds.
