News Discovery of the Day: Medieval Mass Grave Found Below Supermarket in Paris Discovery of the Day: Medieval Mass Grave Found Below Supermarket in Paris The owners of a Monoprix supermarket in Paris knew they were sitting atop the site of an old hospital, but they didn’t expect to find more than 200 bodies buried beneath them. Prior to making some renovations, a group of archaeologists examined the site and made the shocking discovery. According to France 24 News: So far, bodies have been discovered in eight different pits, the first seven of them containing the remains of between five and twenty individuals. But it was the eighth pit that most took the excavators by surprise, with more than 150 skeletons laid out in two rows. And they say more remains are likely to be discovered as the excavations continue. They suspect the people were victims of the plague, and it had been assumed that all of the remains in the hospital were transferred to the Catacombs hundreds of years ago. The Trinité hospital dates back to the 12th century and was destroyed sometime in the 18th century. The French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) will examine the bones and test the DNA to determine cause of death.
