Woman Plays Her Violin During Brain Surgery

Musician Dagmar Turner practiced her scales and performed simple tunes on her violin while undergoing an operation to remove a tumor from her brain at Kings College Hospital in London. Turner was very concerned about her ability to play after the surgery. A plan was made to assuage this concern. Turner was woken during the surgery and was given her violin to play.

After explaining concerns she had over losing the ability to play the violin, Prof Ashkan and the neurosurgical team at King’s devised a plan. Prior to Dagmar’s operation they spent two hours carefully mapping her brain to identify areas that were active when she played the violin and those responsible for controlling language and movement. They also discussed with Dagmar the idea of waking her mid-procedure so she could play. This would ensure the surgeons did not damage any crucial areas of the brain that controlled Dagmar’s delicate hand movements specifically when playing the instrument. With her agreement, a team of surgeons, anaesthetists and therapists went on to meticulously plan the procedure.

California Desert Bursts Into Dazzling Super Bloom And It’s Set To Get Even Better

The dusty hillsides of Southern California’s Anza-Borrego desert are suddenly awash with color. In the wake of a super-wet winter followed by warm weather, huge swathes of Southern California are experiencing a “super bloom” of yellow and purple wildflowers.
The bloom actually started in December with the blossom of the white desert lilies, but things really got going in the past few weeks with the burst of pink Bigelow’s Monkey Flower, Parish poppies, purple Sand Verbena, Ghost Flowers, and yellow Evening Primrose.
Wildflower seeds often have thick or waxy coatings that allow them to lie in the desert soil for years and suddenly burst to life when they experience the right combination of water and temperature.
In super blooms you can get flowers, which in some cases, are thought to be extinct," Richard Minnich, a professor of earth sciences at University of California, told KQED.

A Tribute to the Thai Cave Rescuers

The good news is spreading that all twelve members of the Wild Boars soccer team and their coach have been rescued from a flooded cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
Bangkok sisters Aruni Aunhawarakorn and Jantima Manasviyoungkul have been working on an illustration of the many people and entities involved in the rescue operation. They've updated their work several times, and above is the latest version. See the image full-size at Facebook. The 12 soccer players and their coach are represented by boars. Notice the last one out of the cave is larger than the others -that's the coach. The other animals are representative of:
