Chinese Millionaire Goes Broke Saving Dogs Destined for Slaughterhouse
A Chinese millionaire has spent his entire fortune – and then some – saving thousands of dogs from being butchered for food. He even bought a slaughterhouse and turned an abandoned building into a massive shelter. Wang Yan had been running a successful steel manufacturing business in Changchun city three years ago when his cherished dog went missing.
“I went looking everywhere, but all to no avail,” he told Sina News. “Finally someone let me go into the slaughterhouse to try my luck there.” He didn’t end up finding his pet, but the gruesome sights he witnessed were so deeply traumatic that he felt compelled to establish an animal shelter at an old steel mill.
He provides whatever food and medical care he can to the dogs. There were over 1,000 of them at the shelter at one point, but now there are only about 200, because most of them have been adopted.
However, even adoption won’t ensure a dog’s long and happy life. A law was recently passed by a municipality in Shandong province outlawing dogs. “All dogs must be removed from the district,” said a statement by the committee. “Otherwise authorities will enter your house and kill your dog on the spot.” But that won’t stop Yan from carrying on and saving as many dogs as he can from becoming food. His endeavor has put him spiraling into debt, but he doesn’t regret it. “I don’t accept monetary donations. I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help.”

Keep Benvardin Kennels Open Appeal
On Friday 30th January 2015, as some of you may know, the land that
Benvardin Kennels is situated on has been put up for sale. Benvardin
Kennels (BARK) was set up in 2010 to rescue as many abandoned or
unwanted cats & dogs, entirely run by volunteers and funded by you,
the public. To date the numbers of animals that have come through our
doors has been well into the 1000's. We now urgently need your help! Our
aim is to raise enough money to purchase the site ensuring the future
of animal rescue at Benvardin and prevent closure. We have to reach a
total in the region of £225,000 to keep the shelter open, a massive task
but one that is possible with your help.

Kevin Tran's Shelter Dog Plea
Some shelters won't let you adopt a dog around Christmas time due to them turning into unwanted gifts, but please consider rehoming an abandoned dog rather than buying from a breeder.

Freaky Chicken Feet And Pig Heads Pop Up On UK Streets To Raise Awareness
Street artist Dan Witz has created 30 thought-provoking pieces across London, depicting animals suffering and dying in the meat and dairy industries.
The project titled ‘Empty the Cages’, aims to educate and “remind us of what happens every day on farms and in slaughterhouses”—encouraging the public to help save the animals by choosing not to consume their flesh.

Odessa Heiress Rescues Dog Who Walked 30 Miles Back To Previous Owners - From Pound To Palace
A woman from Independence, Kansas, adopted the dog. But Lady escaped
from her new home and walked 30 miles to her former family with the
small dogs - who declined to take her back, according to the Pet Rescue
Examiner.
The story resonated online and with Rich, who had recently lost her senior black Labrador, Granny, said her assistant, Barbara DiCioccio.
Rich, 65, contacted her staff to rescue the dog from the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter in Sedan, Kansas. At 4 p.m. Thursday, her assistants Chet Ragsdale and Barbara DiCioccio boarded a jet to Kansas to pick up the dog; they returned about 10 p.m..
“We don’t mess around here,” DiCioccio said. “We get things done.”
Lady will have a spot in Rosburg’s 11,000-square-foot, three-story Odessa home with five other dogs and a number of cats, DiCioccio said.
“The dog will be right there where she is,” DiCioccio said. “We already have a bed for her.”
Rich, the great-granddaughter of William J. Wrigley, founder of the famous chewing gum company in 1891, has a history of helping animals in need.
She’s the founder of On the Wings of Angels Rescue and has 70 rescue dogs, cats, cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, pigs and exotic birds in custom-designed quarters on a large tract of land in Odessa.
“That’s the reason I like working for her,” DiCioccio said. “I see all the good she does.”
