Unusual sites like this are scattered along desolate stretches of highway throughout the Southwest, But it seems like Arizona has an abnormally large amount.....must be something in the water....( or lack thereof)
Contact is open to interpretation ......possibly some audio and olfactory communications. My first impressions are that they appear to be sulfur based not carbon based in structure...... There also appears to be different species due to change in the olfactory sensation.....more research is needed for a definite conclusion. But for Now.....I want to believe...
