Abandoned Chatillon Car Cemetery

Urban legend has it that when World War Two ended, departing American soldiers parked their cars in the forest near Chatillon in Belgium. Intent on retrieving them in the future, the years passed and the cars remained where they’d been left almost seven decades earlier.

  1. "Urban legend" seems an apt description. If the story of American GIs leaving cars behind after WWII was true, these cars would be from the 1930s (due to limited wartime production of autos), but these are clearly more recent -- there are other pictures online that show even more clearly 50s and 60s era cars. Also, the phenomenon of Americans bringing personal cars with them to the liberation of Europe seems far-fetched. Most likely, the Americans left a few jeeps behind in the late 40s and the locals used their presence as an excuse to dump their old cars there too and over the years they just piled up.
